i traipsed through dark streets breathing smoke rings for you.
footprints on the wet asphalt in circles, all littered with the
letters of your name. the soles of my shoes know only you.
as many times as we walked over each other, darling your path
is worn into my back and the lines of my palms fold
only to match yours. i traced your eyes in the shadows on the grass
cast from the street lights, faded glow and beautiful shapes donned
on the earth in the springtime night, i looked for you and i found you
there
breathing with the wind, moving you back and forth as i was sieved
away.
this town has storefronts, lampposts and little trees painted the same
shade
of lonely that you brushed onto me. the city hasn't forgotten what
you have
and neither have i, in sleepless nights with empty hours i find you
everywhere.
i count the seconds, i relive the years, pull out the moments when your
skin
was soft-focus and backlit like the hazy skyline. if you'll replace
the cold smile
in your mouth with the times you said you'd be my every, only and
any, then i can
sleep the nights away with you deep in my heart. and forget the feeling
of
your weight on my bones as you started walking away. or forget the
notion of
having to find you anywhere but by my side, in a half-lit room. i miss
you more than
you know, and i need you more than you remember.
